The 25 key questions below will help you check if ADHD affects your child or family. Print out this page if you wish and work through the list of characteristic behaviours. Note how many times your answer to the questions is YES.

Your Child at School
Has real difficulty in learning to read, write, spell?
Has a short attention span? Is easily distracted?
Is two or more years developmentally delayed, immature? Prefers to play with younger children?
Is constantly in trouble for being slow to start work at school, for never getting anything finished?
Has poor fine motor coordination? Has large, messy, scrawled handwriting? Is the one who never gets picked for the team because s/he cannot catch, hit a ball or kick straight?
Never knows what the homework is? Finds it difficult or impossible to structure the work, make time for homework? The work is scrappy, incomplete, way below the standard of which you feel s/he is capable?
Your Child's Personal Problems
Adapts poorly to changes in routine and other significant changes?
Is disorganised, messy, chaotic?
Is often angry, easily frustrated, unhappy? Has a very short fuse?
Has dramatic mood swings, one minute highly excited, soon after down in the dumps, cries for no apparent reason?
Is excessively fidgety, touches everything, is hyperactive?
Your Child's Behaviour at Home
Is very demanding and extremely difficult to please?
Is often destructive, whether intentionally or unintentionally?
Contradicts what you say?
Is self-centred, insensitive to other people's feelings, needs, rights and desires?
Is extremely impulsive? Acts without forethought, is unaware of potential consequences? Displays serious risk-taking behaviour?
Often provocative, antagonistic and defiant; the initiator of conflict with siblings and other children?
Finds it difficult to take responsibility for his or her behaviour; feels that you are always picking on him or her? Seemingly oblivious to the havoc s/he is constantly causing?
Your Child's Health
Prone to illness, ailments, viruses, infections, inflammations, coughs, colds, minor accidents?
Has dark circles under his or her eyes? Is excessively pale?
Particularly susceptible to asthma, eczema or other allergic conditions, migraine headaches, gastrointestinal problems?
You & Your Feelings
As a parent, do you feel misunderstood? Overburdened? Underhelped? Emotionally stressed to breaking point and beyond?
Do you struggle between your natural desire as a parent to love and protect your child and your unavoidable despair at your child's behaviour?

This number is low enough to suggest that it is unlikely that you have an ADHD problem in your family. To double check you may like to do the simple test which is described below.

If this test also indicates that ADHD is not your problem, you need to seek other advice elsewhere. But if the test is positive, Hafer's research is likely to be extremely valuable to you!
